Coal bed methane and CO2 are generally present in coal deposits.
membrane systems are the ultimate solution to separate CO2 from coal bed methane gas. Valuable methane is recovered for pipeline injection and emissions of greenhouse gas is reduced.
After collection and compression from the coal bed seam, medium pressure coal bed methane is sent to a pre-treatment unit. The coal bed methane is a mixture of gases (typically 11% CO2 and 87% CH4). Before being sent to the pipeline and customers, the CO2 content needs to be reduced to below 2%.
membrane systems will selectively separate methane and CO2. High selectivity makes 90%+ methane recovery available with a two stage membrane system.
